R.I.P Haley Hotchner - '100' Criminal Minds

Over the years, I have seen my fair share of TV show characters being bumped off to take the story further. Bumped off cuz either the character lost its value (Preston Burke, GA), or the actor playing the character was moving on (Grissom, CSI) or something just had to be done to jolt the show out of its complacency (Tim Speedle, CSI Miami). Just a thought - all this doesn't apply to Indian television cuz the only way for them is to age the character 20 years for pseudo-makeover stories.

Ok.....For me Haley's death in 100 (5x09) falls in the third category. After a long time (maybe since Gideon left), the show had loads to see besides the whodunnit game. Too many episodes had passed without us getting that extra insight into many of the characters especially Hotchner and it felt like Thomas Gibson was stretching the scarred and angry man act for too long. But all that changed in the 100th episode when the creators re-visited their pilot episode question on whether one can spend their time hunting monsters and not become a monster. The madness in Aaron's eyes while beating the crap out of Foyet and then breaking down holding a dead Haley in his arms - Emmy winning stuff man!!!

But this in no way overshadows the part played by the other characters. Garcia’s reaction to the gunshot, Haley’s wish that Jack be told how good his dad is even though she is the one dying and Strauss’s interrogation of the team. Bravo!!!!

A perfect 100 for the 100th episode. I can barely wait for the next episode – how are the producers going to deal with Gibson’s character, how will the others grow in their endeavour to support Hotch? Lots of questions – WATCH ON!!!!
